Cats * * *

Three Stars, that's got to be the highest score we've got yet!
To be honest I was disappointed. The reviews of Cats have become legendary in their savage criticism. Some of them have been very funny too.  (My favorites: 'Straight out of the kitty litter' and "Like something the cat dragged in"),  so I was perversely fascinated to see this film.  Expecting Cats to be a real hoot for all the wrong reasons.
But really it's not that bad and in fact has some redeeming features. If you hate Cats (the musical that is, not the animal) then you're probably going to hate this.  Personally I thought Cats the musical was just okay but I had no idea what was going on.  At least in this film I got it.   Overall I can't see why anyone who likes the musical would be disappointed with this film. Its fine. Works just fine.
Dancer Francesca Hayward is quite charming as Victoria.  Rebel Wilson is as funny as always.  I liked Mr. Mistoffelees because rather being cocky but incompetent, in this film he lacks confidence and has to be persuaded that his own magic will work.  Jennifer Hudson singing Memory is really quite moving. And unlike most critics I liked the costumes.  I thought they looked pretty good.
I reckon all this Cats slamming is a bit of a nasty pile-on to be honest. Go see it.  You certainly won't be wasting your money and you might even enjoy it.
