Strange but True * * *

This film is copping a bit of negative feedback but actually, I quite liked it...well, some of it.
A major complaint is the logic of it; and I must admit the wheels do come off toward the end. But it's got no more holes in the plot than say Fugue or Suspiria. And compared to a script from  m.night shymalan it almost looks tight.
More pregnant than the plot.
I also have to wonder if some of the complaints come from the disappointment we feel after it's strong and intriguing beginning. It's a good set-up and you want it to stay on track.
A young girl, Melissa, finds herself pregnant, but she hasn't been with anyone for five years.  It's like a miracle birth (which is a theme that is touched upon).  Melissa asserts it must be the child of her boyfriend who died five years ago. The grieving mother of the boyfriend already blames Melissa for her son's death.  She receives this news with anger.  Her other son remains friendly toward Melissa and suggests to his mother that Melissa's story might be true.  Had her son arranged frozen sperm? However, they were teenager lovers. His death was accidental so it's highly unlikely he would have done that.
As the truth unfolds it becomes a sad - you could even call it ugly, story; despite its attempt of redemption toward the end.
It also becomes a thriller, as an unlikely character becomes not only the answer to the mystery  but someone determined to keep it quiet at any price.
At times (especially the first half)  its a pretty good drama, beautifully shot and well acted. It's a shame we are given such a clumsy, highly unlikely, and distasteful explanation.
