Ready or Not * * *
I don't know if you've ever seen those websites where couples "Trash the Dress" post-wedding, but this film made me think it would be the ultimate contribution.
It's a fun crazy film about a naive young woman. Grace is a pretty girl from a disadvantaged background who is marrying a wealthy young bachelor from a long and rich dynasty. Grandpa made his money from games - board games, parlour games etc. He was also into seances and pacts with the devil. The wealth will remain in the family as long as the odd sacrifice is made. And guess who's next?
The family tell Grace, despite the just completed wedding ceremony she can't really be part of the family until she plays a game with them.
Set in a huge Gothic style mansion, the games commence with Hide and Seek. "Coming to get ya, read or not", they call out. "What fun" she thinks as she peeks out of her hiding place. And then she notices they're armed with axes, cross-bows, guns and knives.
So her happy wedding night becomes a night of screaming and running from this bunch of crazy psycho's until she finally decides the only way out of this is to strike back. Yes, there is a bit of a class warfare thing going on here. The slash and splatter is by the bucket load.
There are some very funny lines from characters ranging from deranged children, femme fatales, creepy serving staff, and hatchet faced aunts. All classic horror caricatures.
Grace (played by Australian Samara Weaving) would be the most foul mouthed Scream Queen ever. Barely a sentence comes out of her mouth without a few f*cks squeezed in it. Which I guess is pretty well how most of us would react in the same situation. Well, good Aussie girls anyway.
