21 Bridges * * ½
Apparently there are 21 Bridges that allow you access to Manhattan Island. Detective Andre Davis says "Shut 'em down! - and the tunnels, no one gets on or off this island"., which is quite an imposition on a city like New York.
There has been a robbery and something has gone wrong, with seven cops shot dead. Now we have two drug dealing, cop killing, heavily armed robbers on the loose. The drama is set over a seven hour period from midnight till dawn with Davis and half the NY Police Force determined to catch these bad men. Davis has got an issue of his own in that he is currently under investigation for being a bit too trigger happy. If they had concerns in the past, by the end of this drama they won't even be able to count the bodies, never mind start another investigation.
All this action compacted into a 90 minute film sounds terribly exciting doesn't it? Edge of the seat stuff. Unfortunately it isn't. And I can't quite put my finger on the reason why. The acting is okay, the plot is pretty good, even if it does stretch credibility a bit too far. It looks great: New York at night with wet streets, alleyways, rooftops, warehouse apartments, backs of restaurants. But it just doesn't quite take off . Maybe get Michael Mann to take a look at it, see if he can figure it out.
