Happy Death Day * * 1/2
Well everyone is saying the same thing about this film so I will too. It probably wouldn’t exist if Groundhog day didn’t exist.
“Tree” (weird name, let's just hope there isn’t a forest of girls like her out there) is a horrible young woman who wakes up each morning to find herself starting the same day in which she gets murdered - only to wake up again to find herself starting the same day.

Time for a Tree change. |
The pay off for us, is that getting murdered is a rather humbling experience for Tree, so we watch her change from a vain self-centred bitch to quite a nice young lady as she wakes up each morning, less confident, more shaken and closer to the truth of what is happening.
It’s a light horror (horror for beginners?) with a few shock scenes but generally it’s a bit of a giggle, but unfortunately it weakens in plot as it progresses so when a key character is introduced to explain it all away, we just don’t give a damn anymore. Happy Death Day always was amusingly illogical, but suddenly it becomes disappointingly irrational as it grapples for a conclusion.
But we are pleased to see a turnaround in her character and perhaps that’s the real story: Not overcoming the psychopath who is out to kill her, so much as getting rid of the social psychopath inside herself.
