Land * * * *

I actually like solo films.  One person against nature - the greatest friend or cruelest enemy one could possibly have.  Motivated by grief this is the story of one woman who withdraws from society and purchases a cabin deep in the woods.  The cabin is frighteningly isolated. Further, she has no car or mobile phone.

Looks fine now, but wait till Winter.
The canned food she has brought lasts for a while but canned food doesn't grow on trees so then she is left to her own devices.  And then the snow comes: the rivers and the earth are frozen and the animals are in hibernation. Should have thought of that.

It wouldn't be a spoiler to tell you that she is rescued because that is in every trailer. Plus it's the way that a second character is introduced.  A  charming and confident man who is also a native American with his own burden of grief.

Although it seems they were made for each other romance does not bloom, such is their own inner pain.  But a mutual respect and understanding builds through  his occasional visits.   He is a man that knows how to survive in the wilderness through all seasons and he teaches her.

It's beautifully filmed, though given the spectacular scenery you could hardly go wrong - just point and shoot.

It features actress Robin Wright who also tried her hand at directing.  Unlike many "directed by the main actor" films she restrains herself gracefully and does well both in front and behind the camera.
