A Quiet Place II * * * *

It's pleasing to see a sequel which matches the original in quality and creativity.

I remember that in the original Quiet Place,  they threw us straight into it and gave us no explanation as to where the aliens had come from.

Me and Evelyn tell the audience to STFU!
The first fifteen minutes or so of Part 11 gives us a prequel to the first film, and we see these horrible things arriving. Though I am confused as to how they could be so brutal and animalistic but still have the skills to develop and fly an interstellar craft.  But this is a horror film so never mind that.

After the prequel we get into the sequel and find poor Evelyn is the ultimate desperate, homeless, single mother, with an infant son, a deaf adolescent daughter and a babe in arms.

Society has collapsed, there are no governments, police, army or any other structure to help her. You can forget welfare and women's shelters. Evelyn and her children silently wander around with no plan other than to survive from Aliens which seek out their prey by responding to noise.  Quiet is the only defense they have.  (I sure wish some of the arseholes at the showing I went to would get that message).

They meet a man who they knew before all the chaos. And although he is a great help he does not play the hero, far from it.  That becomes the role of our Regan.

Regan (the deaf daughter) has made a  discovery on how to beat these bastard aliens.  This is continued in Part II and it's mostly about Regan figuring out how she can share her discovery with the rest of the world when so much infrastructure has broken down.

When the man agrees to help Regan with her mission and Mum goes off to get medicine for the wounded son and the son is left alone with a month old baby we suddenly find ourselves watching three stories. And they're all good, as each, in their own situation have to face the same threats, from fire to relentless attacks, to lack of oxygen.

It's a great sequel made all the more rewarding if you've seen the first one, which I would urge you to do.
