Isle Of Dogs * * * *

I'm not a big fan of animation to be honest, but I was very impressed by this.  In fact, it was the animation that I mostly enjoyed. I found the story line a bit plodding.
Isle of Dogs is no dog of a film.
Set in a future Japan the dogs are rounded up and put on an Island that otherwise serves as a garbage tip.  They do this because the dogs have all caught a disease and the city folk want them out.          One little boy misses his dog and sets out to get him back.  Meanwhile back on the mainland a girl leads a protest movement: she smells corruption in the government and believes the dogs have been maligned.
The dogs are funny well developed characters voiced by experienced actors. But it is the look of this film that wins the day.  The expressions and emotions conveyed by the dogs is absolutely convincing. It is extraordinary piece of animation and continues to amaze, from simple acts like preparing food to sweeping landscapes.
With probable good reason, Wes Anderson is regarded as a bit of a genius.  Ten successful feature films under his belt and he's only in his forties.  I haven't seen all of Wes Anderson's films but those which I have seen I have enjoyed.
Isle of Dogs is a film well worth going to see - and I mean that in the literal sense of the word.
