The Theory of Everything * * *

This film has been in the cinemas for a while now, it must be getting towards the end of its run. So I thought I’d better see it before it disappears into a black hole.: pun intended - it’s a film about Stephen Hawking. There is some controversy over the awards and accolades given to Eddie Redmayne for his portrayal of Hawking. With respect to all, mimicking an extreme physical disability is not that hard, and if the person portrayed is still alive and able to be studied, then It’s a role that comes with a solid blueprint. However, there is no doubt that his performance is good -really good. Looks like Hawking, gestures like Hawking. His face must have been in agony from the twisting at the end of it all. But the internal spirit, humour and bravery of the man shines through. The story is told with expedience and care if rather idealistically. His wife and carer (later to become his new partner) are portrayed as beautiful looking women with endless patience and forgiveness.. Perhaps too many of the bumps in the road are glossed over. There are a few tense moments “Shall we turn his life support machine off?" the hospital asks. “No!” says Mrs Hawking, well we kind of know she must have said that. But it is a moving film and a testimony to Stevo that I am sure he’d be happy with too.
