My Old Ass * * * ½

Young Elliot meets her older self.  Well, at least she knows she looks okay.

This modest ninety minute Canadian Film has been warmly received.  I thought it was pretty good, though it certainly had its weaknesses.

A teenage girl has been raised on a cranberry Farm.  She has a loving family but is now going through the "all about me" teenage years.  She and her two best mates like to party together.  She is also vacillating with her sexuality and experimenting with being gay.

On a camping trip she and her friends take a bunch of hallucinogenic mushroom and each get as high as a kite. For Elliot it works like a Genie in the Bottle when her older self (Aubrey Plaza) suddenly appears.  The "Genie" can't grant wishes, but she can give a lot of advice "Stay away from Chad" she advises her younger self.

Next day she meets a new worker on the family farm whose name is... .you guessed it.

Meanwhile, taking advice from her older self, she reevaluates her relationship with her family, especially her brothers with whom she has a sibling rivalry that borders on contempt.  Too bad for Elliot that as she is trying to develop a warmer relationship with her family her brothers and her Mum and Dad keep inviting Chad around, because they really like him.

It's very funny at times and I really liked the fact that after their first encounter, young Elliot could talk to her older self on her Mobile phone whilst hearing somewhat disturbing audio clues (prophesy) in the background - noisy kids etc.

Also, you guessed it, Elliot can't help but fall in love with Chad despite all warnings from her older self.

But in the end it is the older Elliot who learns something from the younger self in a scene so moving, it redeems the film for any of its short falls.
