Spoiler Alert * * * *
Spoiler Alert has a thoroughly unoriginal plot; it takes us down a road we have visited a thousand times, but it still works! As they say, it's not the story, it's the telling of it.
Set in the early 2000s Michael works as a journalist for a TV Magazine. He's a bit of a loner. One night at a club he meets Kit. (It's a gay love story). Their relationship blossoms quickly.

No, the spoiler isn't that they're gay. |
Michael is a guy who writes about television because he unashamedly loves it. He has done all his life. His parents died when he was young and TV gave him solace as a child. The film is moved along with Michael's VO narration. At times we slip into a sitcom featuring himself which he had running in his head when he was a child. Even as an adult his apartment is like that of a child.
Kit is seemingly more confident, but he has yet to face a few things in life - like telling his parents he is gay. Further, Kit struggles with monogamy. Nevertheless, he wants to commit so they move in together. But honeymoons don't last forever and the things they want from life begin to shift. They start to drift apart, but their love for one another remains.
Then, "Spoiler Alert", Kit falls sick - very sick. Without hesitation, Mike takes on the nursing and caring for him until the end.
Sounds predictable? It is! It really is! But it is so well told and the characters and situations so superbly developed and believable, it's a pleasure to spend time with them. Plus, it's surprisingly funny.
Its directed by Michael Showalter who also gave us the excellent, The Eyes of Tammy Faye and The Big Sick.
