The LIttle Things * * ½

One of the brighter moments in The Little Things |
This big production is not getting very good reviews. It won't be getting one from me either.
About 25 years ago (which is when this film is set) there was a celebrated film - Seven. This film is indebted to Seven in no small way. It's also indebted to a whole lot of other films featuring a crazed serial killer, who likes playing mind games with a couple of cops.
Rami Malek plays a new, polished detective who plays by the rules and Denzel Washington is the tired but wizened old cop with unorthodox rule bending ways. There is nothing wrong with their acting. They are good. Jared Leto as the psycho performs very well too. But it just doesn't take off. Ideas are picked up and then dropped again. Pointed references are made especially in regard to Christianity, but not properly followed through on. But maybe it was just being so subtle I just didn't get it. It's a story without much direction or drive. Ideas and references are left all over the place. The only reason you'll be on the edge of your seat will be your eager preparation to get going, rather like when you're trying to get away from some bore that won't stop talking. ...... Are you still there?
