Terminator: Dark Fate * * * *
This brings back the original team: James Cameron as director, Arnold Schwazenegger as T800 and Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor. Never mind their age, there is an excellent work-around for that, Dark Fate is the best Terminator film for years. (After the last two stinkers it needs to be!)
This one unapologetically panders to fans of the original and the two fine sequels that followed it. You're going to be thinking - this scene reminds me of.... and ... .haven't I heard that line before? and you're probably going to love it. It's like your favourite rock band reforming and playing the classic songs you want to hear.
The new Terminator machine, as determined and relentless as ever, can easily change into a replica of any other person and even split itself. In true Terminator tradition it has been sent to eliminate someone who is destined to be a resistance leader in the near future. This time it's a young Mexican woman, Danny. Also sent back from the future to the past is Danny's protector, Grace.
On to the scene comes Sarah Connor, still as crazy and obsessive and dangerous as ever. She has become a one woman vigilante, dedicating her life to terminating Terminators as soon as they appear. She reluctantly finds herself joining forces with Grace and Danny. Meanwhile, Grace has to connect to someone who can help her. With Danny and Sarah in tow, Grace follows her coordinates to find a gentleman who leads a quiet passive life in a country town. Guess who that might be?
The action is non-stop. Explosions and fights aplenty. The plot is lucid and almost logical. The characters are convincing and at times comically self-deprecating (I mean the original Terminator now works as a draper!) It's a blast!
Like Mission Impossible, the idea of another Terminator brought more trepidation than excitement, but like M.I, they've actually got it right. If you enjoyed the first Terminator/s and became disheartened with the fourth and fifth (understandably!) Dark Fate will restore your faith and bring back a host of fun memories.
