Here's irony for you: an idiotic plot on the part of the protagonists makes for a fine movie plot for us to enjoy.
This is a true story. You know when you're young you might sit around with mates talking bullshit? (Some of us still do it now that we're old). Well a couple of lads started talking about getting rich quick by doing a robbery. Banks are too hard so they figure they'll try something else. One of them is aware of an extremely rare book in the University Library in Kansas. It's worth millions and it's only guardian is one lady librarian. "We could steal that and get rich", they figure: and then rather than dismiss their silly thoughts the whole thing start to develop into a real plan.
At least they're smart enough to try and figure out who might buy such an obviously stolen item before they do it.
As they get closer to the date they realise that they simply don't have the manpower to keep an eye on all places and do the job. And so another two equally deluded boys are recruited.
They've done their home work, done the timing, they've got a plan to dress as old men so no one will recognise them. They've got a little model of the library in their basement which they study. Then the big day comes.....
I don't want to spoil it for you but predictably the whole thing becomes a stuff up beyond imagination. Then to put the icing on the cake they give it another go.
The real people who committed the crime also feature in the film. They're older now of course, and have done their time, but we cut back to them during the film, so they can tell us in their own words how things went so perfectly .... wrong. Seeing them and seeing the actors who play them, you have to be impressed by how well cast this film is and how well acted, including Irishman Barry Keoghan.
There is a great selection of songs throughout the film too and everyone of them is an absolutely perfect match for the situation.
