Mission Impossible - Fallout * * * * 1/2
Yeah, I know, Mission Impossible 6,...blah blah; again with the Tom Cruise, blah blah.... but the thing is, this is good! It's really good!
It knows it's stuff and it delivers in spades. It's not like other franchises where they're just making product (well, alright, it is), but the thing about Mission Impossible is that it gets better with each edition. I mean number six in a franchise?! You'd think at this stage it would be one star and begging for euthanasia, but quite the opposite is true. Mission Impossible Fallout delivers one of best action films you're likely to see in a long time.
Ridiculous, impossible (indeed), laughable but absolutely thrilling. It's not until you are through each scenario and out the other side and you've got your breath back that you spare a sensible thought - "Hang on! That couldn't happen! No one could survive that!" Whilst it's happening you are in the moment!
You'll be anxious, you'll be scared, you'll be thrilled, you'll be all the things that you should be in a pumping action movie. It rocks along!
The characters are not so dumb as to be dismisable, whilst not showing a complexity that is incongruous to their impossible bravery and physical action. They're simple, noble beings and you like them for that. You can't help but cheer them on. The somewhat stylised acting seems to pay homage to sixties television, the original source of Mission Impossible..
And the story is so pleasingly simple! Really, I mean that. I can't stand action movies which are full of people who did this because of that and do you remember that guy at the beginning well he did this so she decided to..... Nuh! None of that.
It goes like this: Mad man wants to take over the world. Mad man has a plutonium bomb. Bomb is stolen by extortionists. Mission Impossible team got to get it back. That's about it aside from a couple of simple asides: Mysterious girl on motorbike causing havoc and a powerful femme fatale putting everyone under pressure, and a rogue spy in the Mission Impossible team - or is he? Just enough to allow the occasional twist. Plus, if you do get a little lost, about every 30 minutes, one character or another sums up the situation thus far in the context of their dialogue. It's dead easy to follow, mostly all you have to do is enjoy the kick-ass action - and there is tons of it!
Reflecting on it hours later I couldn't believe how many action scenes I was treated to. Many of which are so big and grand they would easily serve as the climax to other films, but not this, in this film it's just one of dozens. Mostly set in Paris and London where the glamorous background is used to full effect including some iconic buildings. We got car chases, motor bike chases, shoot outs, roof hopping, boat chases. And then it's off to Kashmir for the cliff hanging finale.
Sex? Romance? Pffft!!! Alright, they give it one little nod, but generally you can forget that sooky stuff. We're here for the action! Just three fearless guys and and a girl, and another wickedly charming self interested girl (Vanessa Kirby as the amoral White Widow), who want to save the world. Meanwhile the bomb goes. tick, tick, tick, tick....
For it's genre this is just about as good as it gets.
