Fugue * *

Well the Melbourne International Film Festival is on bringing us both the good and the bad of cinematic efforts from around the world.
Trust me to select this stinker from Poland.
You know those actors who just want to let it all out? They want to show your their anger, their vomit, their pee-pee, their unabashed nudity, their sweaty sex.  Give 'em a screenplay where they can do all that and they're in heaven, never mind the plot. But if there isn't one out there, then go write one yourself I guess.  So it is that this film has come into being with the writer and the lead actor being the same person.
The story is of amnesia. A woman crawls out of a railway subway onto the platform.
Making love to a stranger - her spouse
Cut to 2 years later and they still don't know who she is.  She's put on TV and then her family get a glimpse of her and say "Hang on!" and take her home where she doesn't recognise her child and her child doesn't recognise her.  Her husband is patient but a wee bit frustrated with her and her parents are just glad she's home even  though she can't recognise them.
She does un-self conscious things like wander round with no garments on the lower half and a jacket on the top. She can be dangerous and unpredictable, but mostly she's a bit of a bore and mostly you feel scenes are written so we can all see how hard she can push herself as an actress ("look at me, look at me".
I won't say if she has a memory click and a re-awakening. But I was happy I didn't have to spend more than 100 minutes with her.
Although the screenplay and the lead actor are one and the same person (Gabriela Muskala) it is directed by Agnieszka Smoczynska who recently gave us "The Lure", a much superior film.
