David Brent: Life On The Road * * * *

See that.  That's 4 stars, that is.
I love edgy comedy.  I’m the kind of person who’ll happily take a front row seat when watching a threatening stand-up comedian.  Squirming in the seat a bit doesn’t bother me.  All part of the experience.
So I have always enjoyed the work of Ricky Gervais, because he does self deprecation better than just about anyone.
Continuing from his sitcom TV series “The Office” this is the story of manager David Brent now working as  Sales Rep and determined to give his Rock n Roll dream one last shot.
Cashing in his Super he pays for a backing band, a tour bus, equipment and then organises a tour of pubs none of which are more than a few miles from his home.
It’s excruciating: The band members don’t want to be with him, the audience hate him or laugh at him, the songs are terrible his inappropriateness is everywhere  whilst his optimism and self belief remains unassailable.
It’s almost painful to watch at times, but if you can sit through it, Life on The Road is very funny - and more than a little touching.
