Triangle of Sadness * * * *
Having been so impressed by Force Majeure and The Square I was greatly looking forward to this new film from Ruben Ostlund.
Once again it is rich with black humor and social commentary, but there is a heavy handedness in Triangle. Plus a fairly simplistic scenario that we are well familiar with.
It's divided into three parts. After an amusing insight into male modeling we meet our major protagonists bickering over a tab in a restaurant. He's a male model and she's an "influencer" on the internet. Their argument escalates with bitter accusations. Then they make peace.

In the second section we find them on a cruise. It's an exclusive yacht which only the wealthiest can enjoy. She has got them on for free because she is an "influencer". They are by far the youngest people on there. The rest are middle-aged and retired capitalists: Some are amusing, some are endearing, and some are quite disgusting in their condescension and presumptuousness.
The Captain's Dinner, which he reluctantly attends, turns into a disaster as a storm hits the boat and sickness befalls everyone. The ship is literally awash with vomit and excrement. Meanwhile the Captain and an old Russian are hitting the whisky hard and reading the words of great political writers over the ships PA. But a greater disaster is to come.
In the third part we find a few survivors on an island, including the good looking young couple, a Russian Oligarch, a woman incapable of saying anything other than the same sentence over and over and a few others. None of them have any idea how to survive.
The the ships lifeboat is washed up. It only has one survivor in it - she who was once the toilet maid. She can fish, she can cook, she can provide shelter. Guess whose the boss and who are the subordinates now?
Rich with social commentary, Triangle of Sadness is also hysterically funny with an ending which you will find completely satisfying or infuriatingly ambiguous. Either way you will have enjoyed the journey.
