Official Secrets * * * * ½
This would be one of the best spy/whistle-blower dramatisatons I've ever seen.
Set in 2003 it's the true story of Katharine Gun (Keira Knightley)who worked for the British Government Security Head Quarters. One day, she and her colleagues received disturbing instructions to get dirt on several members of the UN security council in the hope they could find enough about them to persuade them to back an invasion into Iraq, as quite simply there wasn't enough evidence to justify an invasion. Basically, the British Government were out to con the people into entering an unnecessary war.
Outraged she leaked the information to the press. The means with which she did this is edge of the seat stuff.
The reporter who followed it through and published it had to overcome significant hurdles. He worked for a pro-Govt, pro-war newspaper. But truth is truth. Or is it? The document was immediately held up as false by the Government and other press. The reason why it looked dubious is both shocking and extremely funny.
Meanwhile, the Department Katherine Gun worked for commenced their hunting for the leaker. Katherine is in anguish as she watches her friends and colleagues being interrogated. Should she step forward?
If you don't know the outcome to all this, don't find out! I'm not being facetious when I say it's the best anti-climax I've ever seen. It's the one you want and it actually works. It's a beautifully paced and thoroughly exciting drama, revealing facts (and they are facts) that are nothing short of outrageous.
