Louis Theroux: My Scientology Movie * * 1/2

The Scientologists went nuts! And all I did was make things up about 'em! |
If I tell you I wasn’t that impressed by this will you think I must be one of them?
I sometimes wonder who is the most paranoid - Scientologists or people obsessed with Scientologists.
Either way, if you really want an insight into Scientology go see Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief which was released last year and is a much more informative film on the subject than this.
The title of this film says it all: My Scientology Movie. Yep, it’s Lou’s alright. He features himself in just about every scene and gets actors to enact scenes which are in his imagination or told to him by an ex-Scientology member with a serious axe to grind.
He makes a few attempts to get onto their property, and is stalked a fair bit by the Scientologists themselves - complete with their own camera crew.
But I have to wonder, if Lou is happy to audition actors to re-enact imagined scenes of the Scientology boss throwing a tantrum, how can we be sure that the “stalkers” and those following him are not re-enacted also? For instance one of them is actress Paz de la Huerta. Has she joined the Scientologists or is she acting? (Me thinks the latter).
It’s a bit of a giggle, but it's all rather vain and useless- which puts it in the same basket as most of Theroux's work if you ask me.
