10 Cloverfield Lane * * * *

Escapee films always make for exciting drama and 10 Cloverfield Lane really knows how to push the buttons. It’s a scenario we have seen before:  A young woman, Michelle,  wakes up to find herself in an unfamiliar place.  In this case a concrete windowless room.  Memories come back.  She’d had a car accident.  Now she is  being medically but amateurishly attended to.
Her “host” Harold explains she is in an underground bunker that he personally built. Outside is a global catastrophe.  Something has invaded America. Harold's not sure if it is another country or Aliens, but the air outside will kill you. He has another man who he has also brought into the bunker, Emmett.
As the days unfold Michelle and Emmett's sense of captivity become greater than their sense of sanctuary and doubts grow about the situation outside. The behavior of Harold becomes more erratic and frightening, so does his insistence that neither of them are leaving.
It would be a spoiler to tell you if they get out or if Harold is totally nuts, but I’ll tell you this,  as we race toward the ending and Michelle has a realisation and says WTF!!!, you’ll probably be saying it with her.
It’s a fun intense drama beautifully played out.
