Bridge Of Spies * * * *

I really enjoyed this film.  It's a big beautiful and generous production.  The screen is big, the colours are rich, the costumes and sets are perfect.  Everything looks beautiful -  including the ugly.
Even when Spielberg does serious drama the values that he has for his adventure blockbusters are still maintained. The story can be huge, but it’ll never be bigger than the Spielberg telling of it.
Bridge of Spies also  stars Tom Hanks who just seems to get better with age. I've always been fascinated by what he does and never been able to put my finger on it. He’s not even the most handsome of actors, but he’d have to have one of the strongest screen presences.
Set in the 1950’s, during the cold war, Bridge of Spies is the story of an insurance lawyer who was seconded to negotiate with the Russians to exchange captured spies. The work was far from glamorous and the conditions were harsh- it was East Germany - and dangerous.
It’s an excellently told story.  You won’t be disappointed. Unless you want or expect something different than the distinct style of Spielberg and Hanks. But who’d want them to do anything other than that which they each do so well?
