Perfumes * * *

This one was at the recent French Film Festival.  I missed it then.  But it proved to be so popular they've decided to give it a longer run.  So today I caught it.

If you're looking for thrills and spills this definitely isn't the film for you.  But it's a sweet little feel-good drama. Not challenging, but not so sugary as to be sickening.

Oh, and it's utterly unbelievable, but in this type of film, who cares?

"What's that weird smell?"
"Our review".

A guy who is a chauffeur for a hire-car company is on the edge.  His divorce has turned hostile and the ex doesn't want to give him access to his daughter.  The family court tells him he needs to show better accommodation and more secure employment.  His employment is particularly vulnerable as he is just about out of demerit points.

One day he gets a gig driving a lady who specializes in aromas.  Faced with her own challenges she is taking work advising manufacturers ways to cover up their stink - be it in the air they are polluting, or the items they are making.

It's no surprises to see he and she don't get along at all at first.  But something grows, and soon their relationship changes to one of mutual respect - especially as they help each other overcome their respective challenges.

You can take your Mum, you Grandma, your kids, your lover.  It's perfectly safe.  It's one of those films they'll all be okay with.  You'll probably enjoy it too.  Whether you'll remember it is another issue.
