The Godmother * * *

The Godmother (aka Mama Weed) is one of the more disappointing films I have seen at the French Film Festival.

I get the impression that Isabelle Huppert is regarded as the fix it lady of French cinema. She might have the same opinion of herself and rents herself out as a gun for hire.

If you're not sure if you're film is good enough toss in Isabelle.  Most people are so in awe of her they'll just say it's good anyway because she's in it. I've seen Isabelle Huppert do some brilliant stuff - I've also seen her do some real dogs.

This has a weak plot somewhat indebted to Breaking Bad. She's an interpreter for the Police, but the cops only know what she tells them.  One of the senior police is also her lover. When she is assigned to listen in on a drug deal she realizes she knows one of the people involved and tips them off.

To avoid getting caught the drug courier hides hundreds of kilos of hash somewhere on the highway. Knowing the value of it she figures all she has to do is retrieve it, then she can put herself in a position where she can sell it herself.   Thus "The Godmother" or "Mama Weed" comes into being. Then the capers begin.

To evoke our sympathy its  patched together with a rescued dog, a dying Mum, some barely developed selfish daughters and a desire for a "Better Life",  but overall it's pretty dumb and even irritating at times.
