The Way Back * * *
I'm not sure if this was about a recovering alcoholic or a recovering basketball player/coach?
It makes it pretty clear from the opening that the main character (Ben Affleck) has got a serious drinking problem. But we don't see him get into trouble or anything. He's just a construction worker who drinks himself into a stupor every night.
Then an offer comes: the Catholic high school he attended needs a new coach for their basketball team. He was their top player in his school years and they'd like him to take on the job.
His deliberations don't go on for too long. He spends a night figuring out how to say no, and then the next morning says yes.
Then the whole alcohol thing seems to fade into the background. He coaches well and turns the team around. It's all good for him and good for the team.
So is that what the story is about? I asked myself. I wasn't complaining, I was quite entertained.
But then something happens and he is back on the booze. This time with serious consequences.
No more rebuilding his life.
He ends up in a rehab center that a construction worker couldn't afford in a pink fit and it looks like he is getting better.
So maybe that is what what the story is about? I ask myself again.
I don't know.
But it's well acted and quite entertaining even if the undecided story is somewhat frustrating.
