Marriage Story * * * * ½
If you've ever had a thought about getting divorced, here's just the movie to make you think again. And if you really must, then whatever you do, DO NOT get the lawyers involved.
Noah Baumbach has a a great track record and it's sure to continue with this truly powerful drama about an intelligent, reasonably minded, forgiving couple who decide to go their separate ways. With mutual respect they agree to work things out so that no one gets hurt, especially their child.
He is a theater director and she is an actress. She feels that she is constantly working in his shadow and that she has little identity of her own. She grasps an opportunity to be part of a television production in Los Angeles. So she takes their young son and leaves New York. He continues to visit and all is amicable. After a while she decides this wishy-washy separation is unhealthy. She would prefer to properly and legally sever the relationship and move forward; so she engages a Lawyer.
The nightmare that unfolds after this has to be seen to be believed. Never have I seen such a horror show of people losing control. It's the most bloody condemnation of Family Law and family law practitioners.
Once a couple of mutually respecting adults, now their decency and tolerance is taken from them, their ability to communicate is taken from them, and needless to say their money is taken from them - all of it!
Yet, despite their lawyers wishes they still try to speak to each other. They can't help it. It's like they know that this is killing both of them and they each care because of that. The argument they have in one scene is heartbreaking to watch and tour-de-force of acting.
At the same time (you're not going to believe this) but many of the scenes are funny - really funny!
Starring the excellent Adam Driver and Scarlet Johansson, you don't want to miss this. Especially if you've ever thought about divorce!
