Wild Rose * * * 1/2
Well where else would you go to hear authentic Country music other than Glasgow Scotland?
It's not really as crazy as it sounds. Country music is played and celebrated all over the world.
Far too many people relate to Country Music for it to be confined to it's birthplace, even if Nashville remains the Mecca and the city where Rose (the protagonist in this film) aspires to go.
She's been a bad girl and we meet her just as she is given conditional release from prison. She has two young children that her Mum has been caring for. She want's to go back to singing at the local Country Music club, but an ankle bracelet prevents her from going out at night.
Her Mum is encouraging her to give up her silly dreams of being a Country singer and just accept her lot in life. She's destined to be a cleaning lady. After a few monumental stuff-ups she acquiesces. But the lady she ends up cleaning house for is mightily impressed by Rose's talent and encourages her to pursuit her dream.
There is no doubt her voice is magic. A superb Country music voice - fragile and honest - and on that level the film is very persuasive.
Wild Rose is a film that tells a simple but touching story very well. It's beautifully acted, though at times the Glaswegian accent is so strong subtitles would have been helpful.
