What Men Want * *
Is there a difference between humour for black folk and humour for white folk? I don't think so to be honest. But I do believe there is comedy that only black folk could make: Consider, Sorry to Bother You or Get Out! On the other hand there is black humour which is just a dumb-ass slavish copy of the worst of bad white humour but featuring black actors, such as Girls Trip or this film. If you got a bad script it doesn't matter if it features black actors or white actors the end result is the same - crap.
I can't think of much to say about What Men Want other than don't bother. Oh, and the title is misleading. It's not really about what men want at all, it's more about hearing some of the unflattering thoughts of men.
Ali is a "young" black woman who works for a sports agency and - because it's a white male dominated environment - she isn't really getting ahead. Though she seems to say or do very little that makes you think she is more deserving of her current position.
Despite her complaints about gender power imbalance she has a "lapdog" in the form of a flamboyantly gay white male secretary.
Then, one day something happens to her and she can hear what men think, so naturally she takes advantage of it.
In the meantime she meets a nice guy in a bar and has an on/off thing with him. She's a user and he could do much better for himself so I'm confused as to what he sees in her on any level. Anyway he is the love interest. Like Girls Trip it is obsessed with the morals of fidelity whilst happily overlooking - even celebrating - every other moral transgression.
It tries hard to be funny but isn't really. It's just a waste of time. Half way through I had to conclude that the only thing sillier than the film was me sitting in the cinema watching it. If she'd read my thoughts she wouldn't have liked them, that's for sure!
