Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom * * 1/2
When the last Jurassic Park (Jurassic World) came out after a 25 year hiatus I welcomed it. Primarily because it was a pretty good film for it's genre. If I'd known my review would have such an impact I might not have been so generous. ("Guys it was a good come back. A fun blast from the past (pun intended), but now we're going a bit too far." )
Basically this sequel comes across as unnecessary: It's just product.
It's quite a childlike film in many respects with two dimensional characters, simplistic dialogue and deliberately clunky acting. The "plot" is a sort of a "save the puppies" situation.
It takes off from the end of the last film, where the theme park was destroyed. Since then the park has sat there gathering dust. The dinosaurs just kind of wander around the island looking after themselves. But now a volcano at the centre of the island has started to erupt - big time. The dinosaurs are going to die. Well, despite the ruling by some legal council that they should die, Claire from the last film decides she can't put up with that. But who can help? Owen from the last film can help. Claire has also recruited a couple of characters who are just one evolutionary step up from being cartoon characters. - geeky brave little Asian girl and scaredy-cat nerdy black guy. That's the team.
On the island there are a bunch of gun-toting double crossing bad men the team have to contend with.
After being rescued, the shipful of dinosaurs end up in the USA, which was not part of the teams plan. Neither was it part of their plan that the dinosaurs be auctioned off to arms dealers. So rescue part two commences. The dinosaurs have been sent to the grand mansion of Professor Lockwood, an elderly gent who was part of the original Jurassic Park team. He has a "granddaughter" - a screaming five year old who is quick to join Claire's team when she realises the bad men have double crossed her Grandpa.
There are some good imagery especially with the dinosaurs rampaging through the Gothic style home of Lockwood. It becomes rather like a medieval situation of castles and dragons.
It's okay but i really hope they don't do another one. If they continue this trajectory of simplification it'll have to be for pre-schoolers.
(Although we will always be grateful to the Jurassic series for that hysterical You Tube meme)
