Going In Style * * 1/2
There’s two heists going on here. The real one and the one in the film. The one in the film is three old men robbing a bank. The one in reality is three old men robbing an audience.
Starring Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin, this film just never really takes off. Something needs to go wrong - like seriously wrong. But there is no mountains to climb in this one. No great sigh of relief from the audience. I mean, give me some drama!

They can rob a bank but they can/t rob me! |
This comedy caper is about three pensioned old boys in their seventies who haven’t paid off their mortgages yet. And now their company pension cheques are being cut. So they decide to rob a bank - their bank - to assist with their mortgage payments. Similar idea to Hell or High Water. (And a similar idea to what a lot of people have had in real life, I’ll be bound).
Having hired these three fine, seasoned, respected old actors you’d think they’d have a script worthy of their talent. But it just plods along. The construction of their alibi is not bad, but the way it is revealed caused me to respond with “Oh yeah, I get it”, rather than “Wow! That’s so clever!”
It won’t completely disappoint you, but it certainly won’t thrill you.
As they are nice old boys and don’t want to hurt anyone they decide to shoot blanks, which is pretty much what the whole film does.
