The Boss *1/2

Mccarthy looking smug. Taken before she read this review |
Boy, this film is loaded with comedic and dramatic talent! Pity it all goes to waste.
It’s a mystery - not the story, but the film itself, and the mystery is, why does it exist? How did it come into being? Whose fault is this?
It’s just so awful.
It has one or two redeeming scenes - like the opening scene, which is a good mocking representation of many a jumped-up motivational speaker, and a young girl fight that is so brutal it messes with your head by making us question, how come we’re happy to watch blokes do this on the screen but not girls?
But mostly it's a complete waste of time and worse of all, not very funny.
Melissa Mccarthy plays a hugely successful business woman who gets busted for insider trading and goes to jail for a couple of years, comes out again and turns to the only person who will help her, her old associate who is a single Mum now in a bit of a dead end job.
Recognising there might be an opportunity in selling cookies she starts her business ventures again utilising a bunch of girl scouts.
Melissa Mccarthy is given lines and situations that are badly written, Kristen Bell plays her long suffering associate (I don’t think she’s got any funny lines). Peter Dinklage does the best he can with a very badly developed role, but he’s still not very funny.
Oh look it’s just too silly and awful.
I had a couple of hours to spare and decided to waste it watching a no brainer - well I certainly got that.
I guess I have only myself to blame, as will you if you bother going to see this.
